Singapore Animals

Kingdom Animalia

Animal Systematic has been evolving through the ages. As such, the following classification may not reflect all the recent findings and changes.

Invertebrates are animals without backbones. They include almost all the members in the Animal Kingdom, except for those with backbone (vertebrates), like mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fishes. Protozoans (single-celled organisms) used to be considered animals, but they are now grouped under Kingdom Protista. Hence, the most primitive animals are now Sponges. There are several phyla of worm-like animals. Vertebrates all fall within the Phylum Chordata, which also includes invertebrates like Tunicates and Lancelets. The majority of animals, however, are in the Phylum Arthropoda, which includes insects, crustaceans, spiders, centipedes, millipedes, etc.
